?Broke? Tom Lawlor gets $40,000 Knockout of the Night bonus at UFC on Fuel 3 Comment

5:42 am on May 17, 2012 , ,

Tom Lawlor knocked out Jason MacDonald in under a minute at UFC on Fuel 3 Tuesday and earned a $40,000 Knockout of the Night bonus. It turns out the extra money could not have come at a better time.

Lawlor, who is known for his flamboyant entrances and joking mood, became serious in a post-fight interview with Ariel Helwani. When Helwani asked about the pressure to win after coming off a loss at UFC 139, Lawlor admitted that the pressures were financial.

“I’ll be honest. I’m broke. I have no money. This money that I got today, it’s going to be the first time I’ve deposited a check in over a year. A year and a half. This is like a big deal to me. I had to borrow money from friends and family just in order to go into this fight. I want to thank them, obviously. This means a lot to me mentally, it means a lot to my bank account.”

He recently switched training camps and moved to Massachusetts to be closer to family. The cost of living and fighting just once in 2011 — a loss to Chris Weidman at UFC 139 — caught up with him.

“I think I miscalculated the cost of living in the Northeast,” Lawlor said. “I basically took all my money, bought a house and blew through my money ? just living costs, traveling, price of gas, multiple training locations.”

Unlike in the four major sports leagues, fighters pay for their own training expenses. The win plus $40,000 in bonus money should help Lawlor pay back those friends and family who were kind enough to help him.

GM to drop Facebook ads due to low consumer impact Comment

3:37 am , ,

A source familiar with the automaker’s plans said GM’s marketing executives decided Facebook’s ads had little impact on consumers.

While GM’s decision could be an exception in the advertising world, it marked the first highly visible crack in the Facebook strategy, said Brian Wieser, Internet and media analyst at Pivotal Research Group.

“This does highlight what we are arguing is the riskiness of the overall Facebook business model,” he said. “It is not a sure thing. It sure looks likely that it will be one of the most important ad-supported media properties, but it’s not certain because there will be marketers who are challenged to prove the effectiveness of the marketing vehicle.”

Facebook Inc, founded eight years ago by Mark Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room, is expected to start trading on the Nasdaq on Friday. The world’s No. 1 social networking site raised its IPO price range on Tuesday, potentially giving the company a valuation of more than $100 billion.

GM said it will still have Facebook pages, which cost nothing to create, to market its vehicles. GM pays no fee to Facebook for its pages, which allow the automaker to reach consumers directly.

GM said it regularly reviews how it spends its marketing budget and adjusts its approach as needed.

“It’s not unusual for us to move our spending around various media outlets – especially with the growth of multiple social and digital media outlets,” the company said in a statement.

“In terms of Facebook specifically, while we currently do not plan to continue with advertising, we remain committed to an aggressive content strategy through all of our products and brands, as it continues to be a very effective tool for engaging with our customers,” GM said.

NO. 3 U.S. ADVERTISER

GM spends about $40 million on its Facebook presence, but only about $10 million of that is paid to Facebook for advertising, according to the Wall Street Journal which first reported GM’s plans to drop Facebook ads. The remaining budget covers the creation of content and the advertising and media agencies involved, the newspaper said.

GM, the country’s third-largest advertiser behind Procter & Gamble Co and AT&T Inc, spent $1.11 billion on U.S. ads last year, according to Kantar Media, an ad-tracking firm owned by WPP Plc. About $271 million of GM’s total ad spend last year was for online display and search ads excluding Facebook advertising.

Facebook ads make up a small percentage of GM’s advertising budget, but the company said it is committed to the website to market its vehicles.

For instance, the Facebook page for the Chevrolet Sonic small car as of 2000 GMT on Tuesday had more than 423,000 “likes.” The first three months of Sonic’s marketing campaign which began last October were exclusively digital, with TV ads not running until early this year.

REACHING YOUNGER CONSUMERS

While GM rival Ford Motor Co said it was committed to advertising on Facebook, the social media site is just one part of the No. 2 U.S. automaker’s marketing strategy.

“You just can’t buy your way into Facebook,” said Ford spokesman Scott Monty. “You need to have a credible presence and be doing innovative things.”

More than 20 percent of Ford’s marketing budget is spent on digital and social media, he said. The company launched its new Explorer SUV on Facebook.

Automakers are increasingly turning to social media sites to reach younger consumers on their turf for less than a tenth of the cost of a traditional marketing campaign.

Ford first used social media on a wide scale to promote the Fiesta small car in 2009 in a campaign dubbed the “Fiesta Movement.” It spent $5 million on the campaign for the car, which was returning to the U.S. market after roughly three decades.

After the Fiesta campaign, Ford said 60 percent of Americans who said they would buy a small car within two years said they were familiar with the Fiesta. That kind of recognition would cost $100 million through traditional means, the company said.

Most of Facebook’s corporate clients, like Ford, are satisfied with the return they get from their ads, said Jason Beckerman, chief strategy officer for Unified, which helps companies analyze the impact of marketing campaigns on social networking sites. In addition to Ford, clients at his firm include German automaker BMW, P&G and Microsoft Corp.

Beckerman, who has worked with Facebook in the past, said companies tend to be dissatisfied when they simply “throw money” at social networking sites. “Without the proper planning and structure of your buys, you are asking for little to no results.”

NEC tablet with GSM and HSPA breaks cover at the FCC

Regular readers will know that the FCC is a bit of a virtual whistle-blower, alerting tech-hungry Americans to when new goodies might soon be landing on their shores. Other times it coughs up the odd thing we weren’t even waiting for. Today’s offering appears to be a 3G tablet from NEC. There’s little in the way of specification, or even pictures, but we do know it’s sporting GSM and HSPA radios along with the standard WiFi. The device measures 222.6 mm across, which strongly points to a display somewhere in the 7-inch region. The KMP7R4D1-1A model number isn’t ringing any bells right now, but we do remember a few Japanese models that bear a passing resemblance not that long ago.

New carrier Voyager Mobile starts May 15th, promises rewards for chatting it up Comment

Competition among US cellular carriers is about to get a bit fiercer with a fresh national network that will actively encourage using your phone rather than setting hard limits. Newcomer (and MVNO on Sprint’s network) Voyager Mobile is teasing a “frequent talker program” that will give all kinds of perks for the more talkative among us: call your Aunt Ruth a lot and you’ll get phone upgrades, free months of service and smaller nice-to-haves like air mileage and gift cards. That’s helped by Voyager starting off at $19 a month for unlimited voice, although picking a smartphone in the early catalog will hike that to a still rather thrifty $39 for all-unlimited voice, text and WiMAX data. If you’re tempted by the price and don’t mind an early phone roster that focuses on mostly Android-based carryovers like the LG Optimus S, Motorola XPRT or Samsung’s Conquer 4G and Epic 4G Touch, Voyager will swing the virtual doors open for some states (with more to follow) when its countdown expires on May 15th.

ITU: There Are Now Over 1 Billion Users Of Social Media Worldwide, Most On Mobile Comment

1:35 am , ,

facebook-world-mapWhat does it mean when Facebook says it has 901 million monthly active users on its network? According to figures out from the International Telecommunication Union, it effectively signifies that Facebook is the world’s largest social network by a very long shot. The ITU says in a new report that that the number of people using all social media services have passed the 1 billion mark. That is just 100 million shy of Facebook’s usage figure, giving Facebook a 90 percent share of all social networkers. In contrast to the?very biggest players of all — Facebook (900m+ users), Twitter (200m+ users) and LinkedIn (120m+ users) — the rest of the playing field is heavily localized, with services like QQ in China, Vkontakte in Russia, Mixi in Japan, and Google’s Orkut in Brazil, India, and Paraguay among those competing in the space, the ITU notes. The ITU, which is focused on telecoms regulation, flags social media in its report as an area of growing scrutiny for telecoms regulators: not only are social networks becoming more ubiquitous, but services like Facebook are becoming communications mediums in their own right, with voice and text offerings that go head-to-head against similar services from carriers.
